Benefits of Vitamin D
I’m sure everyone has heard that it’s important to go out in the sun to get vitamin D. Why is vitamin D so important? Vitamin D is an essential nutrient our bodies depend on for many things like strengthening the immune system, builds strong and healthy bones, aids in weight loss, fights off depression, cancer preventing, helps to balance blood pressure, relieves stress, and much more!
Did you know that Vitamin D is actually considered a hormone? It’s considered a hormone because it is so curial to many processes in the body. After the body is exposed to sunlight, it is activated by the kidneys and the liver. After it’s activated, it acts like a hormone to regulate calcium the gut. This is important because because it allows for proper calcium and phosphate concentrations which enables healthy bones.
It can be challenging to ensure the body is getting enough Vitamin D, especially in the winter months. Luckily, there are other ways that you can supply your body with Vitamin D.
Sunlight – Studies have shown that being in direct sunlight (ultraviolet rays) for just 10-30 minutes a day can increase Vitamin D levels in the body.
Diet – Vitamin D is found in different foods such as salmon and eggs. It can also be fortified (added) into other foods such as oranges and dairy products.
Supplements – There are many different options when it comes to Vitamin D supplements. It’s important to find a quality supplement that doesn’t contain all the fillers. We sell the brand Standard Process Vitamin D in our office. Feel free to ask questions or pick some up at your next appointment. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider with any medical issues or concerns.
As winter comes to an end and the weather starts to get nicer, get outside and enjoy the sunshine and all the benefits it has to offer your body.
