What’s that noise?

Tinnitus is a fancy word for when a person is experiencing noise in either one or both of their ears. Medically tinnitus is a neurological condition affecting the inner ear. Typically it is a ringing type sound or a buzzing, hissing, clicking or roaring. This noise can be constant or come and go. The sound pitch could be lower or high. What is incredibly frustrating for these people suffering is that the noise is not caused by outside sound or sources and no one else around individually can hear the noise. Tinnitus affects up to 20% of people and is most common in older populations. However, in our clinic here in Hudson, we have been noticing more tinnitus across a wider range of ages.

Common causes of tinnitus could be that it just comes on out of nowhere, to something more significant like an individual suffers a whiplash injury from a motor vehicle accident. Other causes could be too much wax build up, exposure to loud sounds, or it could be a side effect to a medication you are taking. I had a patient who developed tinnitus after jumping into a river and ever since she has had a ringing in her ear.

No matter the cause, this ringing in the ear can greatly affect quality of life. I have seen people drop into deep depression due to this condition, so it needs to be taken seriously.

Chiropractic care can offer proper alignment and balance to the head and neck. When there is proper alignment and we remove subluxation (which is the misalignment of the vertebra that is pinching the nerve) that allows the nervous system to function better. Clinical studies are showing that chiropractic treatment may relieve tinnitus symptoms. Upper cervical region, specifically, of the spine is the first place we check. When there is misalignment in one of those vertebrae, they can put pressure on nerves that go to the ear and into the face. Small and specific adjustments allow the brain to communicate with the body and reconnect which allow the body to function and repair itself.

At Healthmax Chiropractic of Hudson, we offer amazing chiropractic care plans that will look at your body as a whole and see how we can help relieve your tinnitus symptoms, align your spine and rehabilitate the muscles and ligaments that support and attach to the spine.
